Ruaha National Park is Tanzania’s largest national park, covering 20,226 square kilometers (7,809 square miles). It is a remote, rugged, and breathtakingly beautiful wilderness in the southern circuit of Tanzania’s safari destinations. The park is named after the Great Ruaha River, which runs through it, sustaining a vast array of wildlife.
Ruaha is one of Africa’s best-kept safari secrets, often overshadowed by the more famous Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater. However, for those seeking an off-the-beaten-path experience, Ruaha offers some of the best predator sightings in Africa, a diverse landscape of baobab forests, open savannahs, and rocky escarpments, and an abundance of elephants, lions, and wild dogs.
Ruaha is part of a larger ecosystem that includes Rungwa, Kizigo, and Muhesi Game Reserves, covering over 50,000 square kilometers. This makes it one of the largest protected wildlife areas in East Africa, ensuring an authentic, untouched safari experience with minimal crowds.
Ruaha National Park can be visited year-round, but the best time depends on what you want to see and experience.
Dry Season (June to October) – Best for Wildlife Viewing
- The dry season is the best time for game viewing, as water sources dry up and animals congregate around the Great Ruaha River and other remaining waterholes.
- Vegetation is sparse, making it easier to spot predators such as lions, leopards, and cheetahs hunting.
- The weather is generally sunny with minimal rainfall, and mosquitoes are less of a problem.
- Ideal for photographers, as the golden light and dramatic landscapes make for stunning safari shots.
Green Season (November to April) – Best for Birdwatching & Scenery
- The wet season transforms Ruaha into a lush, green paradise, with rivers flowing at full capacity.
- It is the best time for birdwatching, as over 570 bird species, including migratory birds from Europe and Asia, arrive.
- This is the calving season for herbivores like zebras and antelopes, which in turn attracts predators.
- The landscape is stunning, but some roads may become impassable due to rain.
Shoulder Seasons (May & November)
- These months offer a mix of both seasons—some greenery remains, and wildlife is still relatively easy to find.
- Fewer tourists make it a great time for a private, exclusive safari experience.
Ruaha offers a unique safari experience that sets it apart from Tanzania’s more well-known parks.
