Mikumi National Park

Mikumi National Park is one of Tanzania’s most accessible wildlife reserves, located in the Morogoro region, about 283 km west of Dar es Salaam. Covering approximately 3,230 square kilometers, it is the fourth-largest national park in the country and forms part of the greater Selous ecosystem, which also includes the famous Nyerere National Park (formerly Selous Game Reserve). Often compared to the Serengeti due to its vast open plains, Mikumi is home to a diverse range of wildlife, including elephants, lions, giraffes, buffaloes, zebras, hippos, and rare wild dogs.

Its proximity to Dar es Salaam makes it an ideal safari destination for travelers seeking a short but rewarding wildlife experience, whether as a weekend getaway or an extension of a longer Tanzania safari.

The best time to visit Mikumi National Park depends on your preference for wildlife viewing and weather conditions:

  • Dry Season (June to October) – The best time for wildlife spotting, as animals gather around water sources, making them easier to see. The roads are also in good condition, and the weather is pleasant.
  • Wet Season (November to May) – The park is lush and green, perfect for birdwatching and photography, but some areas may become inaccessible due to rain.

For those who want clear game viewing, visiting between June and October is highly recommended.

  • Abundant Wildlife: The park is home to the Big Four (lions, elephants, leopards, and buffalo), as well as other fascinating species like giraffes, zebras, hippos, and wildebeests.
  • Proximity to Dar es Salaam: One of the most accessible national parks in Tanzania, perfect for travelers with limited time.
  • Scenic Beauty: The landscape is a mix of open grasslands, acacia woodlands, and miombo forests, creating a picturesque safari experience.
  • Less Crowded: Unlike Serengeti or Ngorongoro, Mikumi is less busy, offering a more intimate safari experience.
  • Great for Birdwatching: Over 400 bird species inhabit the park, including hornbills, eagles, and flamingos.

Mikumi has a tropical savanna climate, with distinct dry and wet seasons:

  • Dry Season (June – October): Warm days and cooler nights; temperatures range from 20°C to 30°C (68°F – 86°F).
  • Wet Season (November – May): Hot and humid; temperatures range from 25°C to 32°C (77°F – 90°F). Expect occasional rain showers, especially from March to May.

The coolest months are June and July, while the hottest months are January and February.

  • Game Drives: The park offers fantastic game drives, with easy wildlife spotting in the Mkata floodplain, often called the “mini-Serengeti.”
  • Walking Safaris: A guided walking safari lets you explore the park’s flora and fauna up close.
  • Birdwatching: With over 400 bird species, it’s a paradise for bird lovers.
  • Cultural Visits: Visit nearby Maasai villages to learn about local traditions and customs.
  • Photography Safaris: The landscapes and wildlife offer excellent photo opportunities.
