Lake Manyara National Park

Located in northern Tanzania, Lake Manyara National Park is one of the most scenic and ecologically diverse wildlife reserves in the country. Covering approximately 325 square kilometers (125 square miles), with 230 square kilometers occupied by the lake itself, the park offers a mix of lush groundwater forests, open savannah, acacia woodlands, hot springs, and marshlands.

The park sits at the base of the Great Rift Valley escarpment, creating a dramatic backdrop for wildlife viewing. It is famous for its tree-climbing lions, large elephant herds, diverse birdlife, and the seasonal presence of thousands of flamingos. While smaller than Serengeti or Ngorongoro, its compact size makes it easy to explore within a day while still offering incredible wildlife experiences.

Wildlife Highlights:

  • Tree-climbing lions – One of the few places in Africa where lions are regularly seen resting on tree branches.
  • Elephants – Lake Manyara is known for its large elephant population, often seen in family groups.
  • Hippos – Frequently spotted in the Simba River and lake waters, making for great photography.
  • Giraffes, zebras, and buffaloes – Commonly seen on game drives.
  • Flamingos & over 400 bird species – A paradise for bird lovers, with pink flamingos, pelicans, storks, and the African fish eagle.
  • Baboons & monkeys – The dense forest near the entrance is home to one of Africa’s largest baboon troops, along with vervet and blue monkeys.

Lake Manyara National Park is a year-round destination, but different seasons offer distinct experiences:

Dry Season (June to October) – Best for Wildlife Viewing

  • Fewer water sources force animals to gather around permanent waterholes, making spotting wildlife easier.
  • Clear skies and less rainfall provide great conditions for photography and game drives.
  • Fewer mosquitoes due to low humidity.
  • The lake may shrink in size, reducing the number of flamingos.

Wet Season (November to May) – Best for Birdwatching & Scenery

  • Migratory birds arrive, making it one of the best birdwatching times in Tanzania.
  • Lush green landscapes make the park incredibly beautiful.
  • Higher chances of seeing young animals, as this is the birthing season.
  • Some roads may be muddy, but the park is accessible year-round.

Special Months:

  • November–December & March–May – Short and long rainy seasons; best for birding.
  • January–February – A good time for wildlife as the short dry spell keeps the park lush but navigable.

Here are some key reasons to add Lake Manyara to your Tanzania safari itinerary:

Lake Manyara National Park offers more than just traditional game drives, providing visitors with a variety of unique and immersive experiences. While exploring the park by vehicle remains the most popular way to spot elephants, lions, giraffes, and hippos, early morning and late afternoon drives offer the best chances of seeing wildlife in action. For bird enthusiasts, the park is a paradise, home to over 400 species, including vibrant flamingos, pelicans, and herons that thrive along the lake’s shores.

For those seeking a different perspective, seasonal canoeing allows travelers to glide across the lake’s waters, offering close-up encounters with hippos and water birds. Another thrilling experience is the treetop walkway, the longest in Tanzania, where visitors can walk high above the forest canopy, enjoying panoramic views and spotting monkeys and birdlife from an elevated vantage point.

For a completely different atmosphere, night game drives provide a rare opportunity to witness the park’s nocturnal creatures, including leopards, civets, and bush babies, in their natural habitat. Meanwhile, the Maji Moto Hot Springs, located in the southern part of the park, offer a tranquil escape with warm geothermal waters, perfect for relaxation.

Beyond wildlife experiences, Lake Manyara also offers rich cultural interactions with the Maasai people. Visitors can explore a traditional Maasai village, gaining insights into their customs, dress, and way of life.
