Nyerere National Park, formerly part of the vast Selous Game Reserve, is Tanzania’s largest national park, covering over 30,000 square kilometers. Established in 2019, the park is renowned for its diverse wildlife, unspoiled landscapes, and the great Rufiji River, which meanders through its heart, creating stunning wetlands and oxbow lakes. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the last great wilderness areas in Africa.
The park is home to Africa’s Big Five (lion, elephant, buffalo, leopard, and rhino), as well as wild dogs, hippos, crocodiles, and over 440 bird species. Unlike the northern parks of Tanzania, Nyerere offers an off-the-beaten-path safari experience with fewer crowds and a more intimate connection with nature.
Nyerere National Park is a hidden gem that offers a wild and authentic safari experience away from the crowds. Whether you’re looking for a thrilling Big Five safari, a scenic boat ride, or a peaceful escape into nature, this park delivers it all.
The best time to visit Nyerere National Park is during the dry season (June to October) when wildlife gathers around water sources, making it easier to spot animals. During this period, the vegetation is sparse, and the roads are more accessible.
For birdwatching and lush green scenery, the wet season (November to May) is ideal, although some areas may be inaccessible due to heavy rains.
- Uncrowded Safaris: Unlike Serengeti and Ngorongoro, Nyerere offers a more exclusive experience with fewer tourists.
- Rich Wildlife: One of the best places in Africa to see wild dogs, along with large populations of elephants, hippos, and crocodiles.
- Boat Safaris: The Rufiji River allows for unique boat safaris where you can see wildlife from the water—an experience not common in most Tanzanian parks.
- Walking Safaris: Nyerere is one of the few parks in Tanzania where guided walking safaris are permitted, providing an up-close experience with nature.
- Fishing and Birdwatching: The park is a paradise for anglers and bird lovers, with over 440 bird species recorded.
- Dry Season (June to October): Pleasant temperatures, warm days (26–30°C) and cool nights (15–20°C). Ideal for game viewing.
- Wet Season (November to May): Warmer and more humid, with temperatures ranging from 24–32°C. Rainfall peaks between March and May.
