Kilimanjaro - Marangu Route.

The roof of Africa, the summit of your soul.

Kilimanjaro

Adult: $ / person,

The Marangu route, often called the “Coca-Cola route,” is a popular choice for climbing Kilimanjaro. It’s known for being the shortest route, typically taking five or six days, and is considered one of the easier options, though “easier” is relative when climbing such a mountain! Marangu offers hut accommodations, making it a more comfortable experience than camping routes. However, its popularity can mean more crowded trails. While it might not offer the same solitude as other routes, Marangu’s accessibility and shorter duration make it a good option for those with less time or experience.

Keep an eye out for the playful black and white colobus monkeys in the lush rainforest. A four-hour trek through this verdant landscape brings you to your first night’s stop: Mandara Hut (2,700m). After settling in, a guided hike to Maundi Crater offers stunning views of the Kenyan interior. Enjoy dinner and overnight at Mandara Hut.

Day 2: Mandara Hut to Horombo Hut (3,700m)

Today’s journey takes you through heather and onto the open moorland plains, leading to Horombo Hut (3,700m). Weather permitting, you might catch a glimpse of Moshi town and the Pare ranges. The hut offers breathtaking panoramas of Mawenzi, Kibo peak, and the vast Masai steppe. Dinner and overnight at Horombo Hut.

Day 3: Horombo Hut to Kibo Hut (4,700m)

A challenging 5-6 hour trek awaits as you ascend to Kibo Hut (4,700m). The landscape transforms into a plantless plateau connecting Kibo and Mawenzi. This is a long and arduous day, preparing you for the summit push. Dinner and overnight at Kibo Hut.

Day 4: Summit Day! Kibo Hut to Uhuru Peak (5,895m) and Descent to Horombo Hut (3,700m)

The big day! A midnight start is essential, as you begin your ascent while the lava ash is frozen, making for easier walking. The trek takes you past Hans Meyer Cave (5,200m) and steadily upwards. As dawn breaks, you’ll reach Gilman’s Point (5,715m) on the crater rim. The final push to Uhuru Peak (5,895m), the highest point in Africa, is a triumphant 1-2 hour climb. Savor the incredible views before beginning your descent. Back at Kibo Hut, a well-deserved meal and rest await. After a break, continue down to Horombo Hut (3,700m) for dinner and overnight.

Day 5: Horombo Hut to Marangu Gate and Moshi

Your final day! The trail descends through heather and moorland to Mandara Hut (2,700m), where a celebratory lunch is served. The last leg of your journey takes you back into the rainforest, and after approximately six hours of trekking, you’ll arrive at the Marangu Gate (1,860m). From there, you’ll be transferred back to Moshi, filled with memories of your Kilimanjaro adventure.
